Roman Numerals
Initially developed by the Romans in about 500 B.C.E., the Roman numerals system is a set of symbols that stand for numbers. This number system was read from left to right. Throughout Europe, it was used until the 1500's C.E.
The Romans had many different uses for their number system. First of all, Roman numerals were used for calculations. (Because of a controlled and effective number system, Romans could perform calculations easily. This is another important part of a successful society.) In addition, students would learn Roman numerals in school. They practiced writing and deciphering these symbols. Obviously, Roman numerals were a large part of the ancient Roman society.
The uses and impacts of Roman numerals were greatly affected by wealth, gender, and social class. For instance, education. As stated before, usually wealthy boys got high educations. One of their subjects was learning Roman numerals, quite similar to students today learning math. Because girls and lower class Roman citizens did not have as big of an opportunity to get educations as the wealthy did, it was much harder for them to perform calculations. Plebs didn't learn how to properly use and decipher Roman numerals, therefore this system did not apply to them very much.
The Roman numeral system has greatly influenced the modern world. Many parts of modern life include Roman numerals. For example, Roman numerals are used on faces of clocks and to record dates on monuments and public buildings. Another modern use of this system is the Super Bowl. Every year, the Super Bowl is titled with a number written in Roman numerals. In addition, Roman numerals can be used in names. For instance, Pope John Paul II, or Henry the VIII. In conclusion, Roman numerals have greatly impacted daily life today.
